An important city in England’s history that is right along the Severn River is Gloucester near the Welsh border. The first settlers were Romans as many wall ruins and Roman coins have been found that were dated to 48 AD. Once the Romans left the Saxons took over rule in 577 and eventually constructed an abbey in 681. The layout of the core streets can be traced towards the end of Saxon rule.

One of the most notable and well known buildings in the city is the Cathedral. This cathedral was built on top of the foundations of that original abbey. The cathedral is of the Norman style though later additions were made in the Gothic design.

There are four narrow pinnacles on the top which make it recognizable as a famous landmark. There are also four apsidal crypts located in England and one happens to be at Gloucester cathedral. The corridor scenes of the Harry Potter Movies were shot in the cathedral.

There are many houses from medieval times and the Tudor period as they can be distinguished by the many gables and use of timber. Many of the main public buildings have since been demolished but the New Inn can still be visited on Northgate Street. This in has extensive external galleries as well as several courtyards.

Gloucester has been involved in the aerospace business and many developments occurred in the area. The first flight of a jet aircraft using a turbojet engine flew here. And The Gloster Aircraft Company has headquarters and airfields outside the city. There are several sculptures and monuments celebrating the aviation history of the city.

The aerospace industry has an extensive history in this area as many advancements to jet engines occurred here, such as the turbojet engine. An important aerospace company, the Gloster Aircraft Company was located in Gloucester since before the 1900s. You can view many monuments and sculptures throughout the city that deal with aerospace.

One of the oldest musical festivals still held in Europe is in Gloucester every three years. There are a lot of venues for entertainment, music and theater and the Leisure Center and Guidhall being the two largest. You can also attend the International Rhythm and Blues festival held at the end of July and the beginning of August each year. The Tall Ships also have come into Gloucester several times.
