Walking on the soft sand of the Wreck Beach in Vancouver, with my feet dipped in the icy waters, I could not help but marvel the surreal beauty of this bay.

It was a clear summer day, when eagles and herons glided above our heads and the cumulus clouds gathered like clusters of marshmallows in the sky. I could see a kingfisher in the distance, seemingly waiting to catch its prey. On land, parrots and magpies were swooping above the dense forest, almost as if they were monitoring their territory.

However, these resplendent birds were only one part of the reason that had brought me to one of the most beautiful Vancouver beaches. What I really wanted was to feel the experience of being on one of the biggest clothing-optional beaches in Canada and to pick up the vibes out here.

The sprawling beach stretches over 7.8 kilometers, starting from Acadia Beach all the way to the Booming Grounds Creek on the northern branch of Fraser River ” but only Wreck Beach proper claims fame as a nudist playground.

On Acadia Beach, I walked on rocky little pebbles, which rubbed against my sole like foot massage. Plenty of emerald shrubs lay on the beach’s inland, acting as shade for many of the beachgoers. I had heard that wildlife can be seen here, sea lions were the star celebrities here, but I had barely seen a tail since I got here.

As I continued walking, I was glad for the low tide, since it made a straight pathway for me through the waters to Wreck Beach. I wasn’t surprised to see the place teeming with naked people. Amidst all the activity, there were temporary stands on the shoreline, and they were selling a variety of items, including handicrafts, clothes, jewelry and alcohol.

It certainly did not feel like Canada to me. The liberal culture out here had a sense of freedom about it. I felt like I was in a carnival, rather than just another nudist beach. The very air I breathed made me feel happy and liberated. However, being a somewhat conservative girl, I chose not to shed my clothes as I explored the beach.

There are wooden planks all along the coastal area, and they form trails leading down to isolated patches and sandy spits. Trail 7 was known to be a popular one with intimate couples, so I decided to follow it and indulge my curiosity. But I did not come across any couples. Instead I found a very tranquil sandy retreat, where I was all by myself in the company of tall grasses springing out from calm waters. The rays of the sun, which was slowly drifting towards the horizon, were dancing upon the shimmering water surface.

By dusk, my stomach was growling. I headed to the famous Stormin’ Norman by Wreck Beach and gobbled down an outrageous veggie burger, so good I had to have another one before leaving. After the satisfying meal, I washed it all down with Marco’s organic fruit juice ” refreshing and cold, perfect to cool off from the heat.

As the day came to an end, I just thought about how the day was. I truly felt that after spending a day at the Wreck Beach Vancouver, one couldn’t possibly ask for anything else.
